How contemporary fine dining can embody luxury in an approachable, family-like way is exemplified by KOMU, recently awarded two Michelin stars, located near Munich’s Hofstatt.

The Amuse-Bouche: An Elegant Prelude
From the outside, the restaurant presents itself with an old storefront façade, while the interior reveals a carefully conceived design that reflects Christoph Kunz’s culinary fusion shaped by Germany, France, and Japan, the moment guests enter the lounge. Subtle natural tones flow through the space, from the linen wallpaper (Dedar) and custom-made loungers (Fomu Design) to the Art Deco wall lights (Atelier de Troupe) that guide guests toward the bar. A restrained color palette in lobster, sage, and turmeric found in Lambert et Fils pendant lights above the bar, as well as in the bespoke bar stools and benches creates a visual feast for the senses.

Nuanced Fine Dining
Stephanie Thatenhorst designed the fine dining area with a refined use of visual connections to the bar, staircase, and even the kitchen from the chef’s table. Her approach highlights the tactile impact of materials: the forest-green carpet (Vanghent) softens sound, while rounded, wood-paneled seating niches paired with rust-red velvet chairs (Freifrau) create a sense of comfort against the organically shaped tiled wall (Mutina). A custom-made wooden shelving unit and pendant lights (Audo Copenhagen) set against linen wallpaper and a clay-painted ceiling (nen-do) form an airy homage to traditional Japanese shōji architecture.

Culinaric Spotlight: Chef’s Table
Through the shop window on Hackenstraße, passersby can already catch a glimpse of the professional KOMU kitchen. But only at the coveted chef’s table are guests even closer to the action in the two-star restaurant. Here, the focus is on three core principles: tactile diversity, natural nuances, and light. These elements seamlessly unite the modern interior, the outstanding cuisine, and the historic charm of the old building. Delicate carpentry details give the chef’s table a unique atmosphere and emphasize its exceptional character.

Elegant Diversity in the Powder Room
A custom-made wooden staircase leads to the guest bathrooms, where a Japanese-inspired, dark red lacquered room divider immediately captures the eye. Behind it, pedestal sinks (Inbani) are displayed like artworks on light natural stone tiles. The combination of the dark red divider, wooden pedestals, and mint-colored towel shelves creates a truly unique atmosphere. In the ladies’ restroom, dark tiles and a natural fiber wallpaper complete the design, while a vintage wall console (Draga & Aurel) and a golden round mirror (Baxter) add a touch of luxury. A matching pouf invites guests to pause and enjoy the elegance.
At KOMU, every detail has been carefully crafted to create a welcoming and captivating environment. All carpentry was executed by Design.s, while Andreas Gerzer was responsible for the upholstery work. In addition, the tiling and painting were carried out by Brem Malermeisterbetrieb. These masterful artisanal contributions give KOMU its unique charm and play a decisive role in shaping the overall experience.
