This home near Zurich exudes as much harmony as its residents. Dark wood fittings and fabric wallpapers, long dismissed as old-fashioned, are experiencing a modern comeback here – as an airy reinterpretation that doesn’t overwhelm but instead creates warmth and a sense of homeliness.
Right at the entrance, the view opens up to the custom-made kitchen. Floor-to-ceiling elm fixtures combined with green natural stone lend it elegance. The kitchen island with an integrated wine cabinet and the barstools from Objekte unserer Tage turn the space into a lively meeting point – whether for quick meals or long evenings with friends.
Adjacent to the kitchen is the spacious dining area, defined by the custom-designed dining table and chairs from Baxter. A special highlight is the handcrafted lamp by Lambert et Fils in bold Gucci red, which pairs perfectly with the dark green ceramic tiles. From here, the view opens into the living area, where carefully selected rugs by Minuu, CC-Tapis, and SEM Milano, along with handpicked objects by Bitossi and Paola Paronetto, add a personal touch.
The entrance area leads to a guest room on the ground floor, wrapped in warm colors and fabric wallpapers. From here, the staircase to the upper floor unfolds – carpeted, it forms a soft contrast to the cool cement floors and underscores the homey character of the house.
Shop the Look
Upstairs is the TV room – an intimate retreat defined by cozy textiles and calm color accents. Here, the homely side of the house comes to the fore, placing a focus on comfort and a sense of security.
An equally clear and essential element for the interior designer, alongside fabrics, is art – all selected by Munich-based art curator Martina Tauber. Naturally, it also belongs in the bathroom; for Thatenhorst, that’s not even up for debate. Art can be found wherever the interior designer deems an appropriate place for it, whether in the entrance hall, the living room, or unexpectedly above the radiator.
Eccentric, rich in textiles, and above all full of color – that’s how Thatenhorst would describe her style. “I love everything that falls a little outside the norm,” the interior designer reveals. “After all, it’s about telling a story. And in this case, it just happened to be mine.”
Next to it are the master bedroom and the master bathroom. Dark walnut, natural stone, and carefully selected textiles lend both spaces a warm elegance. The interplay of custom-made fittings, refined textures, and subtle 1970s references turns them into a stylish retreat with a distinctly personal touch.
