Kids only! At Rookies on Munich’s Maximilianstraße, the focus playfully turns to children’s eyewear needs. And since this goes far beyond the professional aspects of pediatric optometry, Stephanie Thatenhorst has transformed buying glasses into a cheerful “JUHU” event with happy colors, textures, and surprise effects—guaranteed to make everyone feel good. Everything is designed at kids’ eye level. And absolutely worth seeing, even for the parents!

What resembles a dynamic 3D image is the exhibition space clad entirely in Mutina tiles in an all-over look (meaning both walls and ceiling). It creates a sense of openness and room for a retreat: the consultation counter! Whether it’s a first pair of glasses for nearsighted kids or protective sunglasses—the journey to eyewear begins at the children’s optician’s jungle-print counter (Hermès), which becomes the ultimate eye-catcher as the tiled kitchen unit seems to morph away thanks to the tile pattern. Another striking feature: the light installations in the form of custom-made neon tubes.

Child-Friendly Details with Clarity
To turn trying on glasses into a real happening, Stephanie Thatenhorst transformed the light-filled 30-square-meter space into a cozy retreat through her signature material mix. The blue high-pile carpet creates a muted, feel-good atmosphere, while the columns wrapped in yellow corduroy radiate happiness—just like the low-set displays, benches, and stools upholstered in red-checked Maharam fabric. Ultra-cool details include custom-designed hand mirrors with blue frames and hidden storage under the lounge furniture for a clean finish.

Eye Candy for Take Away
Surrounded by boldly combined patterns, textures, and shapes, both young and old feel instantly at home. Once the perfect pair of glasses has been found, it’s time for love at first sight—or rather, first click! At the retro-vending-machine-meets-Bum-Bum-ice-cream–style dispenser (by the way, THE highlight at Leidmann for the little ones!), kids can pick up their new dream glasses with a personal code. The perfect finale to the eyewear adventure land!
